John Woodhouse developed a passion for photography at a young age, having received a Pentax camera for his 12th birthday. John's artistic talent was inherited from his Mother, Joy Mennie, a highly respected South African artist. John's happiest hours were spent photographing the dramatic beauty of the African wildlife and landscapes.
What started out as a hobby for John became a serious pursuit when he studied for a Diploma in Photography at the Mount Lawley, Western Australia, TAFE. However, it was much later in life that John took his talent one step further and became a professional photographer. John set up a photographic studio in Subiaco, Western Australia in 2005 specialising in portrait and wedding photography and very soon became one of the most sought-after photographers in Perth. That same year John was accepted as a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP) and his photographic prowess was very quickly recognised by his peers – in 2006 he won the Curator's Award for the most artistic print at the West Australian Institute of Professional Photography Awards and was judged the runner-up Portrait Photographer of the Year. Since those early beginnings John has won many awards, including Highest Scoring Print in the Illustrative category and WA runner-up Wedding Photographer of the Year in 2011. John's biggest achievement was being recognised as a Master of Photography by the AIPP, having achieved 14 awards within a period of 5 years for images scoring over 80% in the National Australian Professional Photography Awards. And he topped off the year by scoring over 80% for 3 images in the 2011 International Loupe Awards.
John was commissioned by a number of his clients to produce abstract nude portraits, and he soon realised that his real love was abstract fine art photography. John followed his dream and in 2008 he opened The Orangery Fine Art Gallery where he has had a number of very successful exhibitions showing works from his Black & White Series, his Texture Series; his Flower Series and his High Key Series.
